Carmagnola 4R, for a regeneration of the city

In collaboration with the Settanta7 studio, the architect Luca Galleano and the restorer Allegra Carlone, we won the “Carmagnola 4R, for a regeneration of the city” tender, one of the projects financed under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).

The client of the intervention is the Municipality of Carmagnola, which aims at the regeneration of a historic nucleus of the city, also as a support tool for the inclusion, recovery and improvement of social and environmental conditions, through the re-functionalization of existing public spaces and particularly significant for the community of Carmagnola.

With a work value of approximately 7 million euros, the overall project brings together four projects that gravitate around the urban areas located south of the historic center of the city, each of which is denominated with an ‘R’.

R1: Urban redevelopment of Piazza Antichi Bastioni and Piazza Rayneri
The first intervention in the city’s regeneration process is the project called “Urban redevelopment of Piazza Antichi Bastioni and Piazza Rayneri” which aims to redefine this city area by making it a strong point in the regenerated sector, a collector of aggregation and parking, favoring its use from part of the inhabitants of the neighborhood located south of the historic center.

R2: Environmental restoration of Via De Gasperi – A forest for Carmagnola
The second intervention is focused on the environmental recovery of the green areas and on urban redevelopment through the rationalization of the functions present along the road axis. Among these we highlight the “restoration of the greenery” of the gardens of the same street, the reduction of vehicular flows and consequently of the impact due to the vehicular road network and the enhancement of pedestrian and cycle paths. The municipal administration indicates the aforementioned project as the first step in an urban itinerary characterized by the presence of intensive natural capital. A real “pilot project” aimed at enhancing and increasing the natural basin of the city.

R3: Restoration of the former monastic complex of Sant’Agostino
The third intervention sees the former monastic complex of Sant’Agostino as protagonist, which together with its church are currently unusable; The goal of the intervention is to give the complex back to the community by guaranteeing collective spaces that favor cultural growth. The former monastery is converted into an archival consultation center open to the public, also given the presence of an important historical archive in the city which will be relocated here.
The now deconsecrated church is restored and repurposed as a multipurpose space for exhibitions and small events. The interventions are aimed at consolidating and reinforcing the existing structures in an advanced state of decay and at changing the building’s intended use.

R4: Recovery and redevelopment of municipal buildings of historical/military value (Town Hall – 15th century circular tower, 13th century ancient ramparts)
The fourth intervention of the present project is aimed at the recovery and consolidation works of the circular tower with shoe foot of the Palazzo Comunale, aimed at the creation of a tourist reception point and distribution of tourist information material, and works which will involve extraordinary maintenance and a plant adaptation for the Salone degli Antichi Bastioni, a monumental building in the Municipality of Carmagnola created close to the medieval city walls.

Specifically, GPA will take care of the structural and plant design and the operational management of the planned works.
